British Values in the Early Years Foundation Stage

Fundamental British Values have been embedded in the in the Early Years Foundation Stage since 2014. Recently, the Department for Education published non-statutory advice requiring all schools, as part of a broad and balanced curriculum, to promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society. This guidance relates specifically to the requirements to actively promote fundamental British values in schools.

Schools should promote the fundamental British values of: democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

More information can be found in the document at the bottom of this page.

During the Autumn Term we explored 'Democracy'. We did this through a range of ways such as offering a range of opportunites for the children to share their opinons and ideas through our Family Links programme.

Each week, the children were gathered together to cast their vote. They were able to vote on which story was read during shared reading time, and also had the opportunity to choose warm up games in PE, as well as choose which activites they would like out.

Individual Liberty

During Spring Term, we have so far explored 'Individual Liberty', involving helping the children to develop a positive sense of themselves, offering opportunities for them to share their successes both in and out of school, as well as encouraging them to reflect on the similarites and differences between each other and how to respect other the views and opinons of others.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

We have been sharing, appreciating and learning about other faiths, cultures, traditions, families, communities and ways of life. We have shared our own experiences of Easter celebrations, as well as explored how Easter is celebrated in Poland by talking to two of our mums! We have also learnt more about how the Hindu community celebrate the Spring festival Holi by meeting our special persona doll - Sadhika.
