Sensory and Physical Needs

For example, a child or young person may:

  • have a vision impairment and/or hearing impairments
  • have a physical need that means they must have additional ongoing support and equipment

Some children and young people require special educational provision because they have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of the educational facilities generally provided. These difficulties can be age related and may fluctuate over time. Many children and young people with vision impairment (VI), hearing impairment (HI) or a multi-sensory impairment (MSI) will require specialist support and/or equipment to access their learning, or habilitation support.

We offer a range of interventions at a universal level to specialised provision, these include:

Quality First Teaching and Targeted intervention

  • Whole staff training for emergency treatment e.g, EpiPen use
  • Appropriately trained staff e.g., Paediatric first aider, First aider At work
  • Administration of medicines procedures e.g., Consent forms filled in by parents
  • Bathroom management facilities
  • Accessible grounds and building e.g., slopes as alternative to stairs and a lift

  • In-class additional Teaching Assistant support within class teaching (small group or individual)
  • In-class additional targeted teacher support
  • classroom layout changed
  • Allocated seating area on carpet
  • Specific font type
  • Enlarged text
  • Advice/recommendations from school nursing team/medical team/sensory support team
  • Health Care Plan/Risk Assessment in place
  • Specialist pencils, pencil grips, laptops, wrist supports
  • Specialist seat cushions or chairs
  • Fine motor exercises before writing

  • Regular involvement of outside services for advice and recommendations:

  • One to One provision needed during specific times of the day; all day depending on recommendations
